Build A Business Of Your Own

Many people train as plumbers so that they can join the ranks of the self- employed and have more control over their lives. The majority of newly qualified plumbers over the age of twenty five choose to work for themselves in the domestic market. It's a sensible direction to take as there's plenty of money and jobs available for the right people.

A lot of work will come from friends of people you've done a good job for. People like to recommend great service.

A training college will cover all your trade skills, but your attitude and manners will be down to you. Business can come in from anywhere and everywhere! Politeness and good manners will always be remembered.

Employed commercial plumbers normally do an eight hour day, weekdays only. But if you're going down the domestic route, those hours should be a tad more flexible. If you're willing to work some evenings and weekends on emergency jobs and quotations, householders will soon get to know you can be trusted.

Varied and Satisfying Work

There's always work available for plumbers and heating engineers. Once you've got yourself trained and certified, you need to get good at promoting yourself. The work's very fulfilling - you play an important role in people's day to day lives, so you're never just another number in a big organisation. No two days are the same - you're not stuck in the same place day in day out, and if you don't want to take a job on, you don't have to!

Plumbers who work for themselves must get to grips with doing quotations that win contracts at the right price.

Naturally this means budgeting in all your own costs as well as labour and materials. It sounds complicated, but it's quite straightforward really. Some of the more commercial plumbing courses will teach you about business practices.

The Right Course For You...

You can take City & Guilds training for various plumbing courses in both further education colleges and commercial colleges. Students leaving school will typically go to college full-time followed by work experience and NVQ's.

However, those who are a little older usually prefer to do their training part-time alongside their current job. The commercial colleges are more geared up for their needs, as their courses are less rigid and focus more on the high-demand skill-sets.

Their fees will be higher, but in the long run they're more cost effective for the person looking to work for themselves in a predominantly domestic environment.

Ancillary Training

Any decent training programme will equip you for plumbing work in domestic properties. If, like many plumbers you bolt-on a few extra skills, you'll be able to complete projects yourself without having to bring in other trades. You could get qualified to work on unvented hot water storage systems or water regulations or gas.

It's a big positive to have several strings to your bow. Your customer-base will broaden, and the jobs will be more profitable. You won't have to work around plasterers or electricians timetables if you can do small jobs yourself.

To summarise, the most profitable and efficient way to get into the domestic plumbing market is to train with a reputable private training company.
